Wallpaper dominated interior design trends heavily from the early 1970s through the early 1990s. And then it fell out of the stratosphere, astonishingly fast. It was the stuff of our parents’ and grandparents’ taste. Lacking modern patterns, chic prints, and unique styles, wallpaper became passé. However, in the last two to three years, wallpaper is experiencing a resurgence. Fresh options like geometric, textured, murals and new chintz are making a splash on the scene. Wallpaper is back…bolder and better than ever.
One of my personal favorite types of wallpaper is geometric/graphic prints. Geometric prints can be as bold or as subtle as you like. Make a loud statement with color contrasting graphics. Prefer something subtler? Tone on tone colors are an option for achieving a softer, geometric print. I prefer the sharp lines and balance prevalent in geometric wallpaper. It is symmetrical and adds pattern and repetition to my otherwise chaotic life.
Textured wallpaper is a great way to add depth to a space within your home. Textured wallpaper can be mad out of many things: grasscloths, faux suedes, cork, mica, and more are all ways to add texture to paper. Generally, this style of wallpaper is monochromatic in color, which allows the texture to shine through and be the star of the show. I prefer textured wallpaper in spaces that are a focal point in your home, such as fireplaces, entryways, and bar areas.
Murals are an excellent way to show off your personal passion in a beautiful way. Standard, repeating patterns are stunning, however, non-repeating murals open up many possibilities and ways to tell a story. Murals have the capacity to communicate and capture moods and aspirations. Depending on the subject, murals look best in larger spaces, such as dining rooms, master bedrooms, or oversized foyers.
Traditional chintz wallpaper featured flowers and other botanicals in bright, varying colors on a fairly neutral background. Yes, this was the style of wallpaper your grandmother had on every inch of her walls. In recent years, traditional chintz has been updated to a fashion forward, on-trend option for wallpaper. New chintz is taking components of traditional chintz and revitalizing it using large-scaled florals, electric tones, and whimsical patterns. New chintz pairs exceptionally well with eclectic furniture styles and modern pieces.
